Summit Bowling league set to begin season

by Doreen Cudnik

It's that time of year again, when bowling leagues are gearing up to begin the 1995-96 season. Summit Bowling Association, a group out of Akron, is celebrating its 10th anniversary of league play this season. Each year over 100 novice and veteran bowlers participate in team competition. The season begins Friday, September 8 at 9:30 pm and ends on April 19, 1996.

The league is set up with four member teams and three substitutes per team. It's a great alternative to the bar scene, and a fun way to develop new friendships and meet other gay and lesbian people.

At the end of the season, an awards banquet is held and each bowler receives prize money for his or her efforts as well as great food, entertainment and a chance to win door prizes. Also, being part of the league opens the door for you to participate in various bowling tournaments around the country, including weekend tourneys in Pittsburgh, Columbus, Louisville, Toronto, Pittsburgh, Houston, Milwaukee, and Cleveland's G.I.F.T.

Lesbian-gay family reading

In the Family: A Magazine for Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Their Relations premiered this month with a cover story devoted to the challenges bisexual identity raises for straights, lesbians and gays. The new magazine will

attempt to bridge the

worlds of therapists, lesbian-gay-bi individuals and their straight friends and relatives.

therapy, In the Family delves into topics that are relevant for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and their families, including parenthood, single life, reconciling religious views and sexual identity, the ways in which HIV status affects couples and their families, and more. "The mainstream publications never look at lesbians, gays and bisexuals as being in families, and the lesbian and gay magazines only rarely address our relationships, focusing instead on politics and culture," said founder and editor Laura Markowitz.

Markowitz is also an editor at The Family Therapy Networker, as well as a contributing writer for Glamour, Ms., Utne Reader, Lambda Book Report and other publications. She has also been a seven-time judge for the Lammys, and member of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association.
